Ungkapan menarik mengatakan begini: “Harapan dan kenyataan tidak selamanya sinkron.” Apa yang kita mau, belum tentu orang lain mau; apa yang kita mau juga belum tentu Tuhan mau. Orang Arab bilang: “Saya mau, dan kamu juga mau; tapi Allah melakukan apa yang Dia mau.” Artinya: Di atas kemauan ada kemauan lainnya yang lebih tinggi dan menentukan.
Di zaman disrupsi kayak sekarang, kita diperhadapkan dengan banyak hal baru. Terjadi banyak perubahan; orang kaya jatuh miskin, orang miskin jadi kaya; orang pintar jadi bodoh, orang bodoh jadi terlihat kaya; orang pendiam jadi terlihat girang; orang tidak terkenal tiba-tiba jadi terkenal. Orang pun kadang bertanya, “Kok bisa sih?” Kok bisa sesuatu itu terjadi. Ada perasaan tidak percaya, rasa tidak mungkin, tapi itulah yang terjadi.
Kunci dari perubahan di paruh pertama abad ke-21 ini adalah manajemen diri. Diri sebagai entitas paling penting di sini. Diri ini jugalah yang sedari awal punya perjanjian dengan Tuhan; di alam rahim ibu, ‘sebelum cahaya’, sebelum melihat cahaya gemerlapnya dunia. Maka, kehidupan sejatinya adalah pemenuhan janji diri kepada Sang Pemilik diri. Itulah kenapa semua yang kita lakukan tidak ada yang sia-sia, dan tidak ada yang tidak tercatat; semuanya ada balasan, dan semua ada catatannya–yang kelak ditunjukkan di alam pasca-dunia.
Manajemen diri yang baik dan efektif akan membawa pada produktivitas. Bayangkan: seseorang yang tiap hari hanya main game, tidak salat dan mengaji, tidak bersedekah, tidak belajar, dan tidak punya cita-cita masa depan. Maka, hidupnya hanya akan berkutat dalam sirkel itu saja. Kemanfaatannya sebagai manusia pun hanya terbatas pada ranah yang sempit. Berbeda dengan orang yang taat pada Tuhan, yang indikasinya dia melakukan apa yang Tuhan firmankan. Kemudian dia tambah dengan berbagai tindakan sosial sebagai manifestasi dari ketaatannya kepada Tuhan. Maka, dampaknya akan lebih besar ketimbang yang pertama tadi.
Manajemen diri juga terkait dengan kepekaan hati untuk belajar dan berubah. Cahaya yang dikirimkan matahari dan bulan ke bumi, hujan yang turun deras atau rintik-rintik, sampai pada semilir angin yang begitu menyenangkan kulit. Semua itu mengandung pelajaran. Bahkan, apa yang kita lihat dan dengar dari fenomena sosial–kedatangan dan kepergian, misalnya–juga mengandung pelajaran, hikmah, agar kita mengambil sesuatu.
Kesediaan untuk belajar itu terkait sekali dengan manajemen diri. Diri yang terawat ibarat rumah yang kokoh dan memancarkan cahaya. Sedangkan diri yang tidak terawat ibarat rumah yang rapuh dan tak ada cahaya dari padanya. Agama dan semua moralitas yang dibuat manusia sejatinya membawa manusia menjadi pribadi yang kokoh, bercahaya, dan melipatgandakan (“memproduktifkan”) manfaatnya bagi sesama.
Manajemen diri harus dimulai dari sekarang, saat kita berkata, “Aha! Ini betul.” Setelah menangkap kebaikan–sekecil apapun kebaikan itu–maka kita pun segera berbenah, melangkah untuk perbaikan demi perbaikan.
Maka, tidak berlebihan jika dikatakan, bahwa orang yang produktif adalah orang yang senang berbenah; pikirannya dinamis dan tindakannya berdampak positif bagi sesama. Pikiran dinamis dan tindakan positif itu terlahir dari kesadaran diri bahwa diri ini diberikan kesempatan oleh Tuhan untuk singgah pada alam dunia sebagai jembatan menuju alam pasca-dunia. Untuk itu, sang diri kemudian berjuang menepati janji-janji azalinya kepada Ilahi dengan melakukan kebaikan setiap hari. Yang ada dalam pikirannya setiap waktu adalah: kebaikan, kebaikan, dan kebaikan; manfaat, manfaat, dan manfaat.
